KHF – Director
Stephanie Koczela’s journey in healthcare innovation began with a transformative study abroad experience in Kenya that would ultimately shape her life’s mission. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a degree in International Development Studies, she discovered her true calling: making quality healthcare accessible to low- and middle-income families.
Her professional path is a testament to her unwavering commitment to community health. Before founding Penda Health, Stephanie honed her skills at Kiva.org as the International Field Support Manager, where she demonstrated remarkable leadership by managing operations across 121 partners in over 40 countries. Her earlier roles at Family Care International and Boston Health Care for the Homeless provided her with a profound understanding of community health challenges.
In 2012, Stephanie co-founded Penda Health, a social enterprise that has since become a beacon of hope for millions. Through their innovative Pigia Penda initiative, the organization has expanded to serve over 2 million patients across Nairobi and all 47 Kenyan counties. Under her visionary leadership, Penda Health has established 16 medical centers, seamlessly integrating AI-driven diagnostic tools and forging partnerships with major insurance providers.
Her approach to healthcare is both innovative and deeply compassionate. By combining cutting-edge technology with a patient-centered focus, Stephanie has created a model that ensures high-quality, affordable care reaches those who need it most. Her work extends beyond Penda Health – as the Secretary General of the Rural Private Hospitals Association (RUPHA), she continues to advocate for level 2-3 healthcare providers serving underserved populations.
A passionate advocate for women in healthcare leadership, Stephanie actively works to create opportunities and support for female leaders. Her involvement goes beyond professional boundaries, extending to community initiatives like Valley View Academy and her children’s school, demonstrating a holistic approach to social development.
Her dedication has not gone unnoticed. With Penda Health achieving Level 4 SafeCare certification at multiple facilities and her recent election as a Director of the Kenya Healthcare Federation (KHF), Stephanie Koczela continues to be a driving force in transforming healthcare delivery in Kenya, one patient at a time.
